چکیده

Let us take two groups of, say, 310 people each, drawn from the same population. Now let usdraw two large circles. Withineachcircle, let usdraw31 equallyspacedsmallercir-cles, sothat, foreachsmallcircleinonelargecircle, thereisan equivalently situated small circle in the other large circle. Now we instruct the 31 0 people to form self-assorted sub-groupsof lopeopleeach, andoccupyoneofthesmallcircles. We measure everyone's height, weight, neckcircumference, and abdominal girth. Now we take the mean height, weight, neckcircumference and abdominal girth at each small circle. The next step comprises a comparison of each small circle within one large circle, with the equivalent small circle in the otherlargecircle. Thus,we have31 x4= 124comparisons. If wesetourpvalueforsignificantdifferenceatO.05, we will find, onaverage, 124x0.05= Gsignificantdifferences. Forexam-ple, we might find that circle D1 has a smaller height and weight, circles A1 and F1 have a larger neckcircumference, circle K1 has a larger abdominal girth, and circle 0 1 has a smaller abdominal girth. What are we to make of this data? Wecouldconclude thatthere isadifferencein the mapping of, say, theneckcircumference, withcircle 1 showing largercir-cumference at A1 and F1. Yet, a test for overall statistically significant difference would probably find that there are no real differences here. Going further, we could draw topographical maps of the abdominal girth, assigningdifferentcolors to differentvalues.

BRAIN MAPPING IN NEUROSURGERY

Background and Aim: Brain mapping is a study of the anatomy and function of the CNS (central nervous system). Brain mapping has many techniques and these techniques are permanently changing and updating. From the beginning, brain mapping was invasive and for brain mapping, electrical stimulation of the exposed brain was needed. However, nowadays brain mapping does not require electrical stimula...

Comparison of Count Normalization Methods for Statistical Parametric Mapping Analysis Using a Digital Brain Phantom Obtained from Fluorodeoxyglucose-positron Emission Tomography

Objective(s): Alternative normalization methods were proposed to solve the biased information of SPM in the study of neurodegenerative disease. The objective of this study was to determine the most suitable count normalization method for SPM analysis of a neurodegenerative disease based on the results of different count normalization methods applied on a prepared digital phantom similar to one ...

Initial Experience with Brain Mapping under Awake Craniotomy for Resection of Insular Gliomas of the Dominant Hemisphere

Background & Importance: Insular lobe is located at the depth of sylvian fissure and is hidden by frontal, temporal and parietal lobes in close vicinity of internal capsule and basal ganglia and adjacent to the speech centers in the dominant hemisphere. Thus, radical resection of insular gliomas can be even more difficult. Brain mapping techniques can be used to maximize the extent of...

A Short History of Statistical Parametric Mapping in Functional Neuroimaging

The history of human brain mapping is actually much shorter than one might have anticipated on entering the field. The first brain activation studies harnessed the ability to take images of brain function, successively within the same scanning session. This was facilitated by the use of short half-life radio tracers using Positron Emission Tomography (PET). These techniques became available in ...
